The Family, Uncle Nick and The Fixer

Created by Simon 2 years ago

I first met Nick and the Harvey family at Eastertime in 1980. I had been seeing Sue for a couple of months at uni and came down to meet the family. I walked into a house which was a cacophony of sounds as Maureen was preparing the lunchtine meal. It was a lively and lovely family with Peter avoiding the lunchtime hubbub. All four of Maureen’s childrens were distinctly different but shared the same family traits of being loving, interesting, welcoming and kind people. That very day I wanted to be part of this lovely family forever.

Nick was always a fixer and repairer and wanted to know how things worked. One of his early cars was an Austin Allegro and I remember him cutting out the back parcel shelf and fitting two massive speakers and everyone could hear him arrive before he got home! He loved fixing and improving anything including cameras and reel to reel tape recorders and experimenting with them and repairing them or improving them. He had that innate knowledge and confidence to use or play with things and figure out how things worked. He was modest about these attributes but these skills and thirst for knowledge enabled him to do the jobs thst he did

Uncle Nick’s arrival at our home always elevated the uncertainty of what was about to unfold. Whatever happened it culminated in the  kids would being whipped ip into a feverish state. Normally it involved them jumping on him and hanging off him and a lot of play fighting. Then he would leave just like that. My kids loved it but so did Nick.

When Sue died he helped my children to deal with their grief and was both loving and kind to them.

In short Nick is a man that most men would aspire to be, great fun to be arround, very useful if something breaks, and above all modest, successful, loving and kind. A complete man.
